Energy Analysis
Energy Simulation
Often the most important element of sustainable design is the conservation of energy. DIAGRAM uses a comprehensive suite of the industry’s most advanced energy simulation software to optimize the design of a project from its earliest phases.
Utilizing the full spectrum of energy modelling software empowers the owner and design team to incorporate the most effective, lowest cost energy conservation strategies into a project from the earliest stages of conceptual design through construction, while also taking into consideration future operational strategies.

An example of the effectiveness of the effectives of energy modelling within the Green Globes context is provided by a case study of the Linden Woods Community Centre pictured here. By utilizing the more flexible Green Globes certification process the design team was able to divert $70,000 of fees that were intended for LEED certification to upgrade the projects proposed mechanical system.
The result of these upgrades was a reduction of energy consumption of the new facility of more than $8,000 allowing the community centre to use the savings for community programs.
The upgraded mechanical systems also allow the design team to accommodate the inclusion of a future solar wall ventilation air preheater the will save the community centre more than an additional $10,000 a year in operating costs. Innovative green building financing will allow the community centre to lease the solar wall, essentially paying for its self through energy savings.
The development of an energy model is the key factor in energy conservation in new buildings, allowing them to optimize energy performance at the earliest stages of design.
Energy Modelling
The purpose is to analyze a building design in terms of its energy-related features in order to project energy consumption. Energy modeling can help optimize the building design and allow the design team to prioritize investment and develop strategies that will have the greatest effect on the building’s energy use. In addition it provides valuable input during the conceptual design of the project where changes can easily be done. By utilizing the right tools such as BIM compatible software, it also permits parametric studies to be done during design, which allows a better understanding of the potential energy use of each building component.
